Staying Fit: Guide to Traveling Successfully
The challenges of daily life are often enough to make staying fit hard enough but add traveling to that and you have a potential recipe for disaster.
Traveling, whether it is for work or play, creates many potential excuses ranging from jetlag to not enough time but with a little planning, you can stay fit while on the road.
1.Plan ahead. Planning ahead is the number one key to a successful trip. Research the city, the hotel and surrounding areas. Look for possible running routes. Ask the concierge at the hotel, about gym access or running routes around the facility. In some cases, if the hotel doesn’t have a gym, they may have an affiliation with a near by facility. Check the surrounding restaurants ahead of time. Look for online menus and start to make healthy choices before ever getting to the restaurant. This will help to ease the temptation of making a last minute decision.
2.Be Flexible. Often times we are so used to the level of intensity that your normal fitness routine provides that we often times think it has to be all or nothing. Remember that just because you didn’t get an hour in on the treadmill doesn’t mean you didn’t have a successful workout. Teaching yourself that something is better than nothing will help keep you on a consistent plan.
3.Make your hotel feel like home. One of the excuses I hear all the time from other traveling consultants is that they were tired. After traveling in an airplane or otherwise, the last thing you want to do is sleep in unknown surroundings with new sounds and smells that you have to get used to before ever relaxing enough to fall asleep. Just because you’re in a hotel doesn’t mean it has to feel like a hotel. There are tricks to making that hotel feel like home. First, pack a pillowcase or two. There’s nothing like lying down to sleep and smell that familiar smell of home. When you leave, use the pillowcase to separate the dirty clothes from the clean. Second, mimic your normal sleeping conditions as much as possible. Fore example, if you see with only a sheet, take the bedspread off.
4.Pack appropriately. Obviously you can’t workout if you don’t have comfortable workout clothes handy. Pack at least one pair of tennis shoes and workout clothes. Knowing you have traveled with them might make you more motivated to not let all that extra effort go to waste.
Learning to make simple changes like these can make your traveling experience more successful and your fitness goals still within range. You’ll feel more accomplished and satisfied with yourself and I promise you won’t miss those extra calories you burned.
